I think banfield hospitals (the ones inside petsmart) had some sort of insurance plan for pets.

I hear ya... we had "minor" surgery on our golden retriever... and it cost $385. A friend had to have "knee" surgery to repair a ligament on her yellow lab's leg... $900! Then the repaired ligament failed! Then they just took it out! Poor dog can't chase after tennis balls no mo'!
