OK that was weird. Someone just knocked on my door and when I opened it up, there was a mother and her (I'm guessing 4 year old?) daughter. The mother said "hello" and then right away looked at her daughter and said "Lauren, what do you have to say to this gentleman?". Lauren said "nooooo" and hid behind her mums leg. Her mum said "Lauren, you have something to say to this gentleman, now please say it". Again Lauren said "noooo" and it looked like she was about to cry. At this point I'm REALLY confused, and finally the mother looks at me and says "my daughter has been picking peoples flowers all day and I want her to say she's sorry so she'll learn not to do it". I immediately said "oh no please don't worry about it, let her pick all the flowers she wants from our yard, and please let her keep the ones she's already picked". I don't think that was exactly the answer her mum was looking for.

We had a similar incident a few years ago where some teenagers marked some graffiti on the back of our garage. We didn't even know it was there but I guess they went up and down the block and were eventually caught by the cops.

Their parents brought them to our door and made them apologize. They also made them clean up the graffiti and then mow our lawn for the whole summer.

It was nice to see the parents make their kids take responsibility - and I can't say it wasn't great to not have to worry about yard-work for a couple of months.

@scott - Wow. Now that's actually pretty cool. I'm not a parent, so I really try to refrain from judging other peoples parenting, but that sounds like something I'd do if my kids caused that kind of shit.

@travis - that was pretty much my opinion - flowers grow back (not to mention die) - so if a 4 year old gets some joy from carrying around some flowers, good for her.
