The more I look, the more convinced I am that e-groups (that is, Yahoo Groups and Googlegroups) are dead. They're too complex if you want a mailing list and too ineffectual for full-blown community building. What do you think?

I've belonged to numerous Yahoo! Groups, and to a couple of those, and a couple Google Groups, currently. I don't see them as being overly complicated ... then again, most of the stuff I'm subscribed to is software mailing lists and discussion groups ...

I've found most Groups are either dead as the proverbial dodo or full of spam. I'm not a huge fan.. never have been :D

Never saw a need for them. I always went to web forums vs. groups on the big portal sites

Freecycle uses Yahoo! Groups and kind of works, but it has an overly complicated procedure because it's based on a moderated email list

They won't be dead soon. Both Yahoo and Google groups weren't just being used as a mailing list, but also a file-sharing/link sharing tool. Lot's of people still use it because there's lots of free stuffs there (if you know how to look.:)). But I have to agree it's annoying to use and there are lots of spam.

Yep, most things on the web die slowly. They will remain as will email which I loath more and more. I find 90% of email distribution to be spam and time consuming. Hopefully more and more lists and groups will be RSS focused. Feed me but don't shove it down my throat.
